How the New York Times article, “Food Industry Enlisted Academics in G.M.O. Lobbying War, Emails Show” published on 9/6/2015, Gary Ruskin of USRTK, Eric Lipton, and Kevin Folta, and the impending lawsuit,"Kevin Folta, PhD. v. The New York Times Company et al" have been ruining my life

Science Communication and the Human Cost, it's not who you think it is

Thank you
for your interest and questions, and for all of the messages of support.  And yes, I plan to take part in this lawsuit, not sure what side of the table I will sit at yet.

The Article
This article eventually left me shattered and affected without any recognition that I too was victimized by this article. Collateral damage with no support or remorse by any of the people on either side. While Gary Ruskin of USRTK, Eric Lipton of the New York Times, and Kevin Folta of The University of Florida battle it out in court, I look on from the sidelines as if I was never there for the fallout.

Day 1: Sunday, 9/6/2015 Jackson Wyoming wanting to enjoy the first real vacation in about 10 years with my husband Kevin Folta. We wanted a stress-free vacation, we did not receive it.  We spent the rest of the vacation and the rest of our marriage worried about the article and the fallout from it.

For a bigger impact, the New York Times posted the article on a Sunday, when readership was high.

The Threats
"I know where your wife cycles"

I was afraid for my life. Afraid to be alone. I continue to live in fear. I feared that someone would throw acid on me or stab me when I went to the grocery store or out to eat. I avoided cycling with my cycling club and found different routes, but always looking over my shoulder. There was no longer the carefree joy of being part of a group ride with fellow cyclists.  I was afraid to endanger others by being with them. When Kevin was out of town, I kept the lights on outside so I could see if anyone was watching me or trying to break in. I could not open packages, or pick up packages that were left outside the house.

Our home was broken into, I was scared for my life and continue to be affected. I requested that Kevin Folta not respond to anything written about me. However he continued to keep me in the forefront to people that read the New York Times article and were harassing him. I felt that if they knew it bothered me, that they would continue. There is not one reply from me to these memes until now. I did nothing wrong, and do not deserve to have my emotions so carelessly disregarded. I am being ignored that this was and is problematic for me.

Kevin Folta Engages
I am a regular blogger and I have blogged for about the past 15 years.  I was setting up a new blog, securing the name, testing the site.

I asked Kevin Folta not to post anything about me or about my blog.  He ignored my wishes and my life has never been the same.
Fake Nurse

The memes continued, the stories were reposted, reposted, and reposted. I was forced to remove myself from social media, and bury myself, change my social media identity.

My life was turned upside down. These memes were meant to hurt me, to humiliate me, and they did. Nurses were outraged and commented that I should be ashamed, and I was.

Please Stop

I begged Kevin Folta not to engage any more and to let it die down, but he continued.

Kevin Folta says "fake nurse" claims are "libelous" and the work of "evil people"

Kevin Folta took to Twitter against my wishes and posted my information which led to doxing, articles, threats, memes, social media terrorism, and a harassing phone call to the director of my program.

An Attempt to Correct the Damage Done

The Lawsuit
When Kevin was contemplating filing a lawsuit against the New York Times, Eric Lipton, and Gary Ruskin of USRTK, I encouraged him to pursue it. As a couple, we decided together to go forward with the lawsuit as it would impact both us. It could have positive or very harsh negative financial implications. We talked about how we would pay the legal fees in the event he lost the case, I stood behind Kevin and we decided to go forward. This was a joint effort, and we were both affected. Although Kevin is currently the petitioner, I am now asking to be added to the lawsuit as a petitioner.

Everyday from 9/6/2015 forward the New York Times article has been a dark cloud over our lives. The pending lawsuit against Eric Lipton, The New York Times, and Gary Ruskin of USRTK (filed on 9/1/2017) adds to the already heightened stress from all the media attention. Kevin Folta filed the suit alleging that the article was malicious, and even though Eric Lipton knew it was false, he wrote the article with bias and with intent to defame Kevin Folta. Folta alleges that Lipton was fed a story and colluded with Gary Ruskin of USRTK without regard for the truth or the facts.
